7 Tips to Make Your Move Easier

3 minute read…

Moving homes can be stressful, and its easy to overlook things in the process so here are 7 simple tips to help make your move easier.

1. Plan Ahead & Create a Checklist

In the chaos of moving, its easy to miss important tasks like setting up the utilities at the new house or cancelling them at the old one. Therefore we recommend planning in advance as well as writing a moving checklist to ensure everything is done on time.

Some things to plan out are:

  • Moving Budgets

  • Booking movers/ trucks

  • Pet arrangements

  • Change of address notifications

  • Inventory sheets

  • Floor plans of the new home

  • Meal planning to use up everything in the freezer

  • New and old home inspections, cleaning, & maintenance

2.) Declutter & Organize

Most people think its best to organize after your move, but it's actually better to do it before! And there's no better way to start your organizing process than by decluttering first.

To begin, sell off what you don’t want anymore to offset some costs of the move. Afterwards, donate or give away what you can’t sell.

Finally, recycle or throw away what you can’t donate. As a result this means less packing and more money for you!

3.) Create an Essentials Box

Next, before you start packing moving boxes, pack an essentials bag/ box with items you use every day/ week.

You will need these items all the way up to and right after moving day so its best to have it at hand rather than packing it away to search for it later.

This essentials box will be the last thing to go into your moving truck and the first thing out.

Essential Items include:

  • Toiletries

  • Electronics

  • Medicine

  • Clothes

  • Books

4.) Start Packing Early

In general, you can ease the stress of packing by starting early and in small easy to handle chunks.

Start with rooms that already have storage boxes such as the garage and storage rooms. Then, slowly make your way through your rooms from least to most essential.

Finally, pack your kids rooms and play dens last so they can enjoy their last moments in their old homes.

To summarize, pack your rooms in this order:

  • Garage and Storage

  • Living and Dining Rooms

  • Linen Closets (You can even save some linens and towels for protecting valuables)

  • Office & Spare Bedrooms

  • Bathroom and Kitchen (Non-essentials)

  • Bedrooms and Kids Dens (Non-essentials)

  • Bedroom, Kitchen, and Bathroom Essentials

You can also use a whiteboard marker to label your boxes to ensure you know what’s in each moving box too!

6.) Meal Prep

Meal prepping comes in handy when your kitchen's packed in boxes. We recommend you meal prep with the contents of your freezer a month in advance to reduce food waste.

On moving week, prepare enough meals for at least 5 days so you can spend more time packing for your move. Its healthier while saving you time and money!

7.) Finally, Pack Large Items Into the Moving Truck First

This is especially important if you are doing the moves yourself.

On moving day, pack the largest items such as furniture in the front of your moving truck first then fill in the empty space with moving boxes and lighter items.

This helps ensure everything will fit while creating a base to stack boxes on. And don’t forget to use tiedowns to prevent sliding!
